NEW TERRAIN

By: Jen Levisen, Communications Director, Mortarr

Over the last decade, LandStudio360, a dynamic design studio that offers landscape architecture, planning, and design services, has made a name for itself in southern California and across the globe with its thoughtful, holistic, 360-degree approach to work.

“Our design philosophy is dynamic and organic in nature, yet paradoxically adheres to a structured process,” says David Ling, Partner and Design Principal. “We listen and learn from our clients — their brand, goals, and project context and constraints. Throughout the design process we ask ourselves, ‘why would individuals live, shop, work or play here?’ By exploring those angles, our design solutions strengthen our clients’ brands and create unique, compelling and memorable experiences.”

The studio has created those experiences on projects for companies including The Robert Mayer Corporation’s Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort, in Huntington Beach, Calif.; Starbucks on Walt Disney properties in Anaheim, Calif., and Lake Buena Vista, Fla.; and Emaar Properties – EDS’ Marassi Beach Resort in El Alamein, Egypt.

“Often there’s a misconception that landscape architects are just glorified gardeners who just ‘green up the void’,” says Daniel Miller, Associate Project Manager. “We’re not just going to throw out some furniture, plant some trees and call it a successful project. We always seek to provide an exceptional level of planning and coordination from the outset of the project as we work together with everyone involved throughout the creative design process to ensure that the final results are enjoyed, not only by the owner but by their guests as well.”

Alex Polen, Partner and Managing Principal, feels the studio’s holistic approach sets them apart from others in the industry.

“We’re not just concerned with the landscape or hardscape of a project, but the context of a project as a whole,” he says. “From the architecture to the engineering and design, we take that 360-degree view because we understand the implications each facet has on the other. We take project responsibility seriously and lead the way with fresh design ideas and efficient project processes. We believe this leadership approach sets us apart.”

Building Something Bigger

The growing team at LandStudio360 is a tight-knit group.

“We’ve come together to build something bigger than ourselves and to improve the communities we call home,” says Alex.

Up until this year, home for the team was Southern California. But Daniel and his family decided to make the leap and put down roots in Meridian, Idaho. Located in the heart of the Treasure Valley, Meridian is considered one of the fastest-growing cities in the Pacific Northwest and the country.

For these reasons, LandStudio360 decided to make the leap as well and open a design studio there.

“The Pacific Northwest, Boise and Meridian in particular, have been experiencing a season of population growth which has resulted in a lot of new development and we feel this expansion opportunity is a great fit with the culture of our studio,” says Daniel.

“We’re looking forward to having a positive impact on our new surroundings and the region in terms of new development and redevelopment,” says Alex. “We believe our high sense of professionalism, expertise in the field, and diverse project portfolio bring high value to our second home.”

So, is the Pacific Northwest ready for LandStudio360? The team believes it is.

“With the large influx of transplants the area has experienced over the last decade, developers have been investing a lot of resources and the new development reflects that -- people are starting to expect more and more. It will be exciting to start building the long-term relationships here and to take part in creating spaces that people enjoy.  People living in Boise, and in the greater Pacific Northwest, want to be outdoors – whether it’s enjoying the local parks or natural open spaces or relaxing in a well-designed restaurant patio on a sunny afternoon, our expertise and hospitality-forward mindset will lend themselves perfectly to the wants and needs of this growing region. We’re excited for the opportunity and really look forward to further assess the regional markets, adapt and adjust to new design challenges, and positively affect this new community we call home.”

Starbucks at Downtown Disney

Anaheim, California

With a living wall showcasing an artistic representation of a steaming cup of coffee, the LandStudio360 team married elements of the Starbucks experience, the whimsical nature of the Walt Disney brand, with the natural beauty of southern California. A mature Ficus tree with hanging light pendants anchors the illuminated patio space that is complete with a variety of seating types giving guests numerous options.

The Ranch House

Audie Murphy Ranch

Menifee, California

LandStudio360 was the project lead and landscape architect for The Ranch House, the main community center and gem of Audie Murphy Ranch, a luxury, all-inclusive master-planned community. The Ranch House features a community building surrounded by a playground, firepits, recreation and game areas, lawn areas with an amphitheater, two pools and a spa.

Shepherd Church

Porter Ranch, California

LandStudio360 was a vital team member for Shepherd Church’s redeveloped main campus at Porter Ranch. With a strong storytelling and thematic elements, the campus features 12 stone towers, each representing one of the 12 tribes of Israel, that meander through the central plaza and illuminate a path. The thematic plant palette is rooted in material mentioned in the Bible; beautiful, custom-made LED cattails, two large fountains (one a baptismal fountain), firepits, and many seating options populate throughout the entire space and welcome the congregation.
