It's no secret that scores of people turn their attention away from holiday indulgences and toward health and wellness at the beginning of each year. All hoping to have better results than Mr. Big or Peloton's marketing team. But is it enough to get a shiny new Life Time Fitness key fob or should we be discussing the health and wellness behind every aspect of our lives? Spoiler — we should.
What is commercial design's role and responsibility when creating offices, restaurants, schools, gyms, and public gathering spaces? To get us started, Forum editors tracked down their favorite health and wellness project inspiration and products.
Project: Roseman University of Health Sciences
Details: The Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) Clinic at Roseman University of Health Sciences is an environment that blends healthcare and education. The organization provides dental care to patients while giving student and resident dentists practical training. Knowing healthcare and education landscapes evolve regularly, Roseman University turned to DIRTT to create a responsive environment. DIRTT’s flexible solutions prepare the university for the inevitable, allowing them to adapt to innovation and change over time. DIRTT quick-connect power plays a key role in this flexibility.

Details: The São Paulo Health Clinic featured Durasein’s solid surface acrylic material in Dovetail. The São Paulo Health Clinic project shows that hospital design can follow the National Health Surveillance Agency rules without giving up innovation.

Project: Center for Health and Wellbeing
Details: The Center for Health and Wellbeing is a state-of-the-art, unique healthy living center located in Winter Park, Florida, featuring lighting products from Acuity Brands - Gotham® Lighting. This project was in collaboration with Duda|Paine Architects & Cline Bettridge Bernstein Lighting Design, and Acuity Brands agent Landreth Lighting & NY Digital, and was photographed by Robert Benson Photography.

Project: Ashford Castle
Details: By installing SageGlass® in its spa, Ashford Castle has admirably combined history and modernity. Its clients are now able to experience a more enjoyable and comfortable stay when utilizing its swimming pool and sports facilities due to the prevention of excess glare and unwanted solar heat gain.

Project: The Spot Denver Bouldering Gym
Details: The Spot Denver Bouldering Gym has an astounding 8,000 sq ft of bouldering terrain. Eldorado Climbing Walls Panelized Wall™ provides climbing wall operators with a quick-installation alternative to their seamless High Performance™ system.

Details: SIXINCH® USA’s Cliffy 6000 is a great bench to rest on after a hard workout at the gym. Available in three different parts allowing for one large element or multiple benches. These FlexPlus coated benches are rated for indoor and outdoor use.

Project: Apuane Spa at the Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita
Details: Named the “Spa of the Week” by Elite Traveler magazine, the Apuane Spa was also featured on the Forbes Travel Guide website. Justifiably so. The luxurious retreat, reimagined and expanded by Kollin Altomare Architects, offers 21,500 square feet of wellness and relaxation, all in a space shaped to create a calming, intimate experience. Guests flow comfortably from a secluded garden courtyard to 12 expanded treatment rooms, the Apuane suites for a romantic couples massage, or state-of-the-art fitness center and world-class beauty salon.

Details: Eclectic Contract provided custom furniture for the Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa in Tucson, Arizona, including this spacious conversation area looking over the mountain view.

Project: E.L. Wiegand Fitness Center
Details: Worthgroup’s team of architects and designers worked with Hastings + Chivetta on the design for the new E.L. Wiegand Fitness Center project at the University of Nevada, Reno Campus. The new $40M state-of-the-art 150,000 square foot center nearly tripled the space dedicated to fitness at the university. The new fitness center is a five-story facility offering multi-use space for fitness along with a lower-level parking garage. The fitness center is envisioned as offering multiple fitness areas for weightlifting, training, and a multitude of other fitness classes and activities, plus an indoor, 200 meter, 1/8th mile running track. Three full-court gymnasiums are not only utilized for basketball but also other indoor multi-use court sports.
